Solar & DC-Compatible Pumps

Low-voltage well and transfer pumps designed for solar arrays and battery banks.

About this service

Off-grid power means off-grid pumps. We install and service DC and low-voltage pumps sized to solar systems and battery banks — for wells, cisterns, and pressurization.

✦

Signs it's time to call

  • Solar system can't reliably run a standard 240V well pump.
  • Generator runtime is being eaten by water pumping.
  • Existing DC pump is underperforming or has failed.
  • You're planning a new build and want pumps that fit the power budget.
✦

How we approach it

  • Match pump model and voltage to your array, controller, and head.
  • Add float switches and pressure controllers that play nicely with DC.
  • Set up accumulator tanks so the pump runs less and lasts longer.
  • Coordinate with your solar installer on wiring and protection.

Common Questions

Can I run a standard well pump off a solar system?

Sometimes, with a large enough inverter and battery bank — but it's often inefficient. Purpose-built DC or low-voltage AC pumps draw less power, start gently, and pair with smaller arrays.

What's the advantage of a DC well pump?

Direct-DC pumps run straight off solar panels (with a controller) — no inverter losses, soft-starting motors, and they keep pumping during cloudy days at reduced output. Great fit for off-grid wells with modest daily demand.

How deep can a DC submersible pump go?

Modern DC submersibles handle 200–800 feet depending on model and flow. We'll spec to your well depth, static water level, and daily gallons needed.

Do I need batteries with a solar pump?

Not always. A common setup is to pump straight to a large storage tank during daylight, then gravity- or pump-feed the cabin from storage. Storage tank acts as your 'battery.' Simpler, cheaper, and very reliable.

How much water can a solar pump deliver per day?

Depends on the panel array, sun hours, and pumping head. A typical residential DC submersible with 400–600W of solar can deliver 500–1,500 gallons a day in summer. We size to your usage with margin for cloudy spells.

Will solar pumps work in winter?

They produce less in short, low-sun winter days. We oversize the array, add tilt for winter sun angle, and include storage so a few cloudy days don't leave you dry. For year-round full-time use, we sometimes pair with a small generator backup.

Can I use a DC pump to pressurize the cabin?

Better to use a DC or low-voltage AC booster pump on the cabin side, fed from a gravity or atmospheric storage tank. Trying to make a single pump both lift from the well and pressurize the cabin is inefficient.

Will you coordinate with my solar installer?

Yes. We size the pump and pumping system, they size the array and electrical. We've worked alongside several Idaho solar installers and it goes smoothly when both sides plan up front.

What's a pump controller?

An electronics box between the solar panels and the pump that conditions power, soft-starts the motor, and protects against dry-running and over-voltage. Required for most DC submersibles — we install one with every pump.

Are solar pumps more expensive than conventional?

The pump itself often costs more, but you save on the solar array sizing, the inverter, and long-term generator runtime. For a true off-grid cabin, the total system cost is usually lower than running a standard well pump off batteries.
